How to Manage Store UOMs?

Store UOMs (units of measure) tell Rentablez how to count your consumable store items — spare parts, cleaning supplies, office stock, and other non-rental inventory. Set up units like Pieces, Litres, or Kilograms once, then pick the right one whenever you add a store item so quantities and stock counts always read clearly.

Why Set Up Store UOMs?

Every consumable item is counted in some unit. Defining that list up front keeps your store inventory tidy and consistent:

  • Clarity — everyone counts the same item the same way (a drum of oil is always in Litres, gloves always in Pieces).
  • Consistency — the same units appear in every store item form, so there are no typos or one-off spellings.
  • Cleaner reports — stock levels and usage roll up correctly when units are standardized.

Store UOMs are separate from inventory Units of Measurement. Store UOMs apply only to consumable store items. Rental assets use their own list — see How to Set Up Units of Measurement?.

Where to Find It

Navigate to Settings → Stores & Parts → Store UOMs to open the List of Store UOMs page.

View All Store UOMs

The page shows a table of every store unit you’ve created, with these columns:

ColumnWhat it shows
UOM NameThe unit’s name (e.g. Pieces, Litres, KG)
DescriptionAn optional note describing the unit
StatusWhether the unit is Active or Inactive

Only Active units appear in the dropdown when you add or edit a store item.

Create a Store UOM

  1. Click Add Store UOM in the top-right corner.
  2. In the Create Store UOM window, enter the UOM Name (required) — for example Pieces, Litres, or KG.
  3. Optionally add a Description to explain when the unit is used.
  4. Click Add.

The new unit is saved as active and is immediately available when adding store items.

Tip: Keep names short and recognizable. A clear name like Box or Roll is easier to pick from a list than a long phrase.

Edit a Store UOM

  1. Click the UOM Name (shown as a link) in the row you want to change, or use the row’s edit action.
  2. In the Edit Store UOM window, update the UOM Name or Description.
  3. To change availability, flip the Active Status toggle and confirm the change in the dialog.
  4. Click Save.

Note: Renaming a unit updates it everywhere it’s used — store items already assigned to that unit will reflect the new name.

Activate or Deactivate a Store UOM

Instead of deleting units you no longer use, deactivate them so they stay off new item forms without affecting existing stock.

  1. In the Actions column, click Deactivate on an active unit (or Activate on an inactive one).
  2. Confirm your choice in the dialog.

A deactivated unit no longer appears when adding or editing store items, but any existing items keep the unit they were saved with. You can reactivate it at any time.

Who Can Change This?

Only users with Stores Write permission can add, edit, activate, or deactivate store UOMs. Without it, the Add Store UOM button and row actions are disabled.

You’re all set!

You now know how to define and maintain the units your consumable store runs on. With a clean UOM list in place, every store item you add will count and report consistently.
